The work of the Technical Superintendents in the Technical Office
Origami Soluciones2023-08-03T09:35:23+00:00As in the previous blog, we discussed the type of work carried out by the technical office in the vast organization chart that shipping companies have according to their size. Today we are going to delve a little deeper into the technical office but in the direct work carried out by the Technical Superintendents in them.
They have an annual budget to carry out the different types of maintenance exposed in previous blogs, and in some cases, they have an extra budget for emergency situations.
The superintendents in certain circumstances, oversee providing and/or authorizing the acquisition of spare parts and specific items to the ship, such as different types of fuels, lubricants, and chemical products.
They are also in charge, together with the DPA (Direct Person Ashore), of organizing and choosing the right shipyard to be able to carry out the different types of maintenance and Class Inspections that the ship requires.
In the organizational part of the shipyard, the superintendent, the captains, and chief engineers organize the different types of work that must be carried out.
This is for the ship to continue navigating and carrying out its work safely for the crew, the environment, and the company’s property and be under the Class Society and flag status regulations.
After the list of works to be carried out for the shipyard is obtained jointly between the Technical Office, the Operations Office to which the DPA belongs, and the ship, both offices choose the best shipyard according to these items.
Price quality
According to the different jobs to be carried out, the agreed work regime, and the amount of labor used in the contract with the shipyard, an initial budget is issued. In some cases, it can be higher if there is no control by the Superintendents during the shipyard period.
Vessel Navigation Routes
The shipyard is chosen due to the proximity of the routes in which the vessel operates, minimizing navigation expenses and, in some cases of emergencies, repairing the vessel as soon as possible and returning to its working route or condition of Charter.
Pre-agreements with the Shipping company
In some cases, the Shipping companies have pre-agreements with the shipyards to carry out maintenance work on the different ships of the company's fleet. This is agreed to reduce costs, and
In some cases, the Shipyards built the ship that agreed with the company on the first repair periods to ensure the perfect functioning of the ship and, in some cases, on the guarantees agreed between both parties.
Another type of work that the Technical Superintendents carry out is the meticulous control of quality and time in which the shipyards carry out the works during the repair period.
This is to avoid receiving at the end of the ship’s repair period, surcharges in the agreed works, or delays in the delivery of the ship.
But one of the Technical Superintendent’s essential functions is monitoring maintenance work carried out on board.
This is done through the Company’s Maintenance Plan, which includes the different maintenance routines for the Deck and Engineering departments. As we have previously explained in other blogs, this type of routine is loaded with the different information collected at work. It is again programmed to be carried out at the intervals stipulated by the manufacturer of the machinery or equipment.
In turn, the Technical Superintendent performs different types of audits on the ship to inspect whether the work is being carried out in accordance with the standard stipulated by the Industry, Class Society, Ship Registry, and Company.
And finally, one of the most important jobs of the Technical Superintendent is theTechnical Support to the Captains and Chief Engineers in times of failure of essential equipment or safety for the crew, navigation, and the environment. As well as in any structural failures that affect the stability of the ship or its watertight integrity.
In the Technical Office, the Technical Superintendent has the same manuals and construction drawings that are on board to help the crews in these critical moments. He also has the power to contact the Risk Assessment Office of the Class Society to which the ship belongs.
