Origami Soluciones2023-11-14T08:59:02+00:00In the previous blog, we addressed several aspects that shipping companies, through their technical and operations offices, must consider before a ship enters the shipyard maintenance period.
As we know, several companies have part of their large offices managed by third-party companies which provide the technical and logistical support that these large companies demand.
But getting back to the topic, now we must choose the best shipyard to use according to the type of ship we have. This is done by negotiating the shipyard Tender or Shipyard Quote for the work to be carried out.
In some cases, companies subcontract companies to perform certain types of services or repairs on their ships, for which the shipyards charge a plus for letting these companies work in their facilities. For this reason, we must obtain several quotes from subcontractors and from the Shipyard chosen to carry out different types of work.
For the list of works and services that we must perform, we must have in advance the necessary materials and spare parts to be able to perform the different maintenance services on the ship’s systems. We must also consider that certain equipment or systems of the ship must be carried out by certified personnel from the equipment factory or its technical service personnel to obtain the certificates required by the Class and Maritime Authority.
This type of service must be scheduled in advance because in certain cases the technical services need logistical support from the shipyards to be able to carry out the different tasks on the onboard equipment.
These types of maintenance are carried out by the technical services of the companies, once carried out, the general reports of the service performed are sent. To which they must be sent to the Class Society.
In the same period, as we mentioned above, shipping or Management companies must organize the relevant Class inspections according to the schedule of the vessel and its function.
For all the services carried out on the vessel, including its painting, the contracted Shipyard must issue a general report, which must be delivered to the Class Company of the vessel.
According to the magnitude of the work carried out on board, a sea trial with the shipyard and the class company is scheduled at the end of this maintenance period.
This type of testing consists of testing the different equipment of the ship in various navigation conditions. The power of the propulsion machine is tested after the different maintenance interventions, which consist of timing its consumption, temperatures, and pressures of the different systems of the propulsion machine in the different driving regimes.
Vibration and power tests of the propulsion system are also carried out.
In the steering or rudder system, the Evolution Circle, Zigzag, and Man Overboard tests are carried out.
In the generation systems or generation plants, before the departure of the ship, all tests are carried out on the generation plant, including the protection tests of each machinery such as alarm tests on the generator engine (oil pressure, high temperature of Coolant, Over speed). Also in the main panel, the protections on the main breakers are tested such as (Reverse Power protection, Low Voltage, Overload, and parallel coupling functions with other machinery).
Testing of all navigation instruments on the Command Bridge including communication systems and Crash Stop testing.
All these tests are monitored by the Surveyor of the Class Society, those in charge of the Shipyard Technical Office, the Technical and Operations Superintendent of the Shipping Company or Management, the Captain, the Chief Engineer, and the rest of the crew.
The data collected in the tests becomes of utmost importance and will be kept in the ship’s files for the Class Society.
